Fux: Guaranteed to Come Again

Fux

Fux (Fyooks) is like an Electric Storm, combining multiple elements and sounds that flow throughout the space and provide a performance you just can’t stop staring into. Not only bringing the Passion back to Rock-n-Roll but also touching multiple genres including Psychedelic rock, Heavy rock, Funk, Jamtronic, Jazz, and Beatles pop like lyrical phrases. The name derives from composer Johann Joseph Fux, who helped modernize Western Music and is the author of Gradus ad Parnassum, a treatise on counterpoint. Blending their love for Umphrey’s McGee, Phish, Al Di Meola, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Steely Dan and many classic rock bands, Sultan set out to find the final puzzle pieces to this mystical musical monster, which lead to the discovery of Dustin Fennell, Dylan Porper, and Eric Johnson. Thus in an erotic crossfire hurricane Fux was born.

Fux decided it was time to take their knowledge and mend it with their soul to work towards getting the masses dancing, laid, and spreading Love. After receiving knowledge from idols Jacob Alan Cinninger, Brendan Bayliss (Umphrey’s McGee) and Gabriel Marin (Consider the Source) they were finally ready to show the world what was brewing in their mind to create music that makes sense.

Fux combines their humorous and laid back personalities on and off stage to help spread cheerfulness and positivity to the world. Don’t let their contagious attitudes fool you, these boys show up to play. With the machine like transcendental rhythmic varieties from Eric , wondrous varieties of sounds for the imagination from Dylan, thunderous bass love bombs from Dustin and sporadic psychedelic ignition from Sultan, Fux will keep you dancing all night long.

“I wish i named my band something good.”

Brendan Bayliss, Umphrey’s McGee

Guitar, Vocals

Mark Sultan

Mark Sultan’s story first starts in the Steel Jungle of Brooklyn and Queens before moving to home in Atlanta Georgia. A first generation American from Guyana, Sultan was introduced to the percussive arts from the hands to basic rudimental stick control at the age of six. He went on to explore the world of percussion through Wind Ensembles, Jazz and Rock Bands, and Drum Corps and Marching The Rose Bowl. It wasn’t until college that he picked up the beautiful six strings and suddenly… everything changed.

Even from a young age Sultan was singing and writing music, from making percussion arrangements and solos to compete in the PASIC competition, to making full compositions on all instruments in his friend’s garages for his own therapy. Not to mention many duets to Bollywood Songs with his Mother (He liked to sing the female parts).

Playing in other bands throughout his life, He never felt he had the creative threshold needed to satisfy the hunger of a budding musician. This was the birth to the skeleton that supports Fux, allow every musician to express themself. Sultan dove into the guitar getting information everywhere he could from a wide array of guitarists. But, everything he learned served as his utility belt for passion. His soulful guitar sounds will take you down a smooth country road accelerating to the open highway before you launch off a ramp like a Daredevil shooting for the Cosmos.

When not on the road, Sultan enjoys his home with his beautiful girlfriend,  two  good kitties, and one bad kitty. He enjoys spicy foods, tasty cocktails, and loves to interact with others and meet new people. When not at home, you can find him at an Umphrey’s McGee concert or supporting live local music. All you need is love.

Bass, Vocals

Dustin Fennell

Born in Texas, raised in Michigan and educated in Georgia, Dustin Carroll Fennell showed a penchant for music at an early age, from learning how to put a record on the turntable strumming along to Bruce Springsteen on a plank of 2×4 at the age of six to middle school orchestra percussion and then leaving the Midwest for the big city completely solo to attend the Atlanta Institute of Music in 2004

Falling in love with Atlanta he decided to stay and has since played in various original projects and has done professional live and studio session work. Through a mutual love of Umphreys McGee and a random chance encounter on Facebook he met Sultan and was brought into the Fux fold. Bringing to the table an eclectic versatility in style and taste, Dustin combines the pocket and groove of funk, the ferocity and energy of punk, the left of center vibes of psychedelia and the free flowing exploration of jam and jazz.

If Dustin isn’t playing music he is likely watching it live, whether it be internationally renowned acts or local hero’s, so if you see him at a show feel free to say hello! I’m sure he’d be happy to have a drink with ya.

Dylan Porper

Dylan Porper is a Georgia Native growing up in Marietta.  He started Piano lessons in the young age of 6 and by 11 years old got into Hard Rock and taught himself guitar. He’s also jammed with some friends in high school playing in various Rock Groups. He then became a more sophisticated musician diving into the realms of Prog Rock, experimentation, and jazz fusion in junior year of high school. He was also involved in a jazz ensemble at Kennesaw State University on Piano. After high school, Dylan studied at Atlanta Institute of Music and Media for two years with the instrument and music technology degree.

Once at an Umphrey’s McGee concert, Dylan met Sultan and had a meaningful conversation about life and music, and just a year later they were creating music together. When not tearing it up with Fux on his mean Moog, you can find him playing in party / wedding bands, and some local shows with numerous acts.

Drums

Eric Johnson

Growing up as a gospel drummer, Eric began building his pocket, chops and most importantly his ear! Having to listen to all the other instruments and vocalist while picking where to place his fills became a fun challenge for him. Then Eric was introduced to the genre of metal which really boosted his speed and versatility around the kit! Add that with his studies from his days Marching Snare in Drumline and you begin to understand how his style was molded. His time in high school really opened my eyes to even more genres. That’s also where him and Mark Sultan first met, who was his Drumline captain and good friend. They became instant homies as they pushed each other to get better at the snare drum. Now with Sultan on lead guitar and Eric on kit They are both still pushing their potentials. In the rare moments when Eric is not behind his drums, he spends his time either bowling or predicting tracks by working as an audio engineer.

Tour Manager

Brandon Bryant

Brandon, or B, is one of Sultan’s best friends from his younger days. He is from a laid back town called Decatur, Ga (COD) and is the Tour Manager to the Rock Fury called Fux. Music is his first love and he enjoys listening to all types of genres, but hip hop has always been his passion. He was first introduced to the band Fux by first hand watching Sultan on his journey from the very beginning. Sultan would always tell him his dream of starting his own band and touring around the world. To watch his dream come into reality only fueled B to join this magical journey.  If you see him around at shows or festivals don’t be afraid to to say hey and chat about music. In his spare time he B sleep so excuse that “hibernating” face he has.

General Manager

Cordell Carrier

Eleven years of business management would prepare Cordell to lead Fux into the raging 20’s and beyond.  With a strong work ethic and no B.S. attitude, there’s not a promotor or problem he can’t handle. Born and raised in the Appalachian mountains.  Cordell developed a love for music, family, and hard work.  Instantly recognizable with his infectious smile and southern drawl.  Make sure you say hi if you see him at a show. He first met Sultan by always standing near each other at Umphrey’s McGee concerts. After just a few interactions they become very close friends and knew they should take this journey together. When he’s not managing Fux, you can find him shredding trails on his mountain bike or raging the front row at an Umphrey’s McGee show.
